The Best of Barbados

I'm proud to showcase Wales on my blog, but I also love to travel as well, so I thought I would share with you my experience of the beautiful island of Barbados. We visited the island in February, and it was the perfect escape from the cold and the rain in the UK.

Barbados is an island which really has it all; fantastic weather, friendly locals, amazing food, stunning beaches...I could go on. If you're thinking of going there then you may like to read this quick round-up of the best places on the island.

The best beach
There are lots of fabulous beaches on the island, and they're all special in their own unique way, but Dover Beach was our favourite. Located on the south coast, it's a large, clean beach of powdery white sand and it's not too overcrowded with sun loungers. There's plenty of space to relax under a palm tree, take a dip in the ocean, try some water sports, or grab a bite to eat in one of the many restaurants and bars in St Lawrence Gap.

Best spot for lunch
Lone Star is a boutique hotel and restaurant in Alleynes Bay, on the west coast. The restaurant is light and airy, with wooden interiors painted white, and bevelled mirrors and ceiling fans, overlooking a gorgeous ocean view. The atmosphere is stylish yet relaxed, and the food is delicious. I had Boston lump crab with salad, and D enjoyed the American black Angus beef burger with hand cut chips. For dessert, we shared some delicious donuts with caramel sauce and crushed pistachio, accompanied by vanilla ice cream. It was a memorable meal, and later on we strolled along to a secluded cove further along the coast and we went snorkeling. It's a beautiful place and I would love to go back.

The best surf
If you're a seasoned surfer then you need to head to Bathsheba on the east coast. If you're not a surfer (I'm not!), it's still worth a visit because it's pretty cool watching the surfers catch the smasher 12ft waves from the Atlantic. The Round House restaurant, perched on the hilltop overlooking the "Soup Bowl" is a great spot to do this. The restaurant serves Caribbean cuisine, and has indoor and outdoor seating.

Best place for a cocktail
Everyone enjoys a cocktail when they're on holiday, so you may as well do it in style. With this in mind, we took a trip to Sandy Lane. We strolled in off the beach (which was frowned upon), so you should really make a reservation. However, we stayed for a bit and I enjoyed a rather nice strawberry daiquiri. It's pretentious, but if you're curious to see what the big fuss is about then I would suggest that you go and take a look.

The best place to watch the sun go down

Anywhere on the west coast is a great spot to watch the sun go down. One of my favourite places was at the Fairmont Royal Pavilion Hotel. The palm trees were so tall, and looked wonderful against the setting sun. My favourite time of day on the beach is when the sun is setting; it's so beautiful.

Best for nature
The whole island is full of beautiful flowers, creatures, sights, and sounds, just waiting for you to discover them! It really is a photographer's dream...there are so many amazing colours, and the light is stunning.

We absolutely LOVE Barbados, and we can't wait to go back.

Have you been to Barbados? Where are your favourite places to visit on the island?
