Stand Up Paddle Boarding, Croatia

During our recent trip to Croatia, my boyfriend and I thought we'd try Stand Up Paddle (SUP) boarding together. After a quick search online we came across paddlesurfcroatia.com  and we discovered that a SUP tour on Baćina Lakes had excellent reviews on TripAdvisor and was less than 2 hours' drive from where we were staying in Dubrovnik, so we booked it up over the phone.

I'd never tried SUP before, so I was a little nervous. I'm a confident swimmer but trying something like this was a bit out of my comfort zone. My boyfriend had done SUP several times before, and I was secretly hoping that I wouldn't be completely useless at it!

We arrived at the lakes at 10.00am, ready for our 3 hour tour. Our excellent instructor Ivan provided us both with wetsuits and gave us a brief lesson, before we ventured out on to the water. He even put one of our iPhones in a waterproof case so he could take photos of us on our tour of the lakes.

Ivan was exceptionally friendly and very patient with me as we started off. I was initially too nervous to stand up on the board, so for the first hour or so I was quite happy to sit on the board and paddle along, enjoying the natural beauty of the lakes.
At one point during the tour we stopped off on the shore for a break of delicious fruit and water. It was lovely to hear Ivan's stories, take in the beautiful scenery, and give our arms a rest (SUP is a great workout, especially for your arms!). After the break I decided to be brave (!) and have another go at standing up on the SUP...
Tah dah! :-D
I did it! Amazingly, I didn't fall in. I have no idea how I managed it. My boyfriend told me that he fell in at least 5 times when he first tried it, which made me feel a bit better. I was really glad that I gave it a go :-)

Ivan was very reassuring and an excellent instructor. We would definitely recommend the trip to those who have never done paddle boarding before; the lake surface was very smooth and easy to learn on. It was hot and sunny, and David jumped in the water a couple of times to cool off. I didn't feel confident enough to do this, but I'd imagine it to be very refreshing under the midday sun.

The tour itself was an absolute delight; we have been to many beautiful places, but the peaceful atmosphere and beautiful mountains, as well as the lake itself, really was exceptional. We saw tiny fish jumping up from the water, amazing dragonflies, butterflies and waterlily pads. We were only sad that we didn't have time to go again before we flew home.
If you are having any doubts about taking this tour...don't! It was the best thing we did in Croatia, and we had a wonderful time here in this beautiful country.

Thank you for reading! Angharad x

  2. This looks like such a great experience, and the weather looks as though it was behaving for you both! I love the sound of the 'fruit and water' break, I'm not surprised SUP would be tough on the arms!!

  3. I've been paddle boarding for quite some time and if you're just starting out, finding a placid lake amidst a dazzling scenery will make the activity more enjoyable to do. Croatia is a fantastic place to go to and I've been there a couple of times so I agree with you that it's a great place to be in. There are many paddle boards in the market so make sure to get only from trusted brands with affordable products. You can find a lot of reviews on this site to help you make a wise decision.
